Most buyers of farm machinery now start their search online. They scroll through many listings and decide within seconds which sellers to call. A good ad does not need marketing skill. It needs to answer the buyer's questions before they ask them and give them a reason to trust you.

1. Take photos that answer questions

Photos are the first thing a buyer looks at, and listings with several clear photos get far more interest than those with one blurry picture.

  • Shoot in daylight, in the open, with the machine clean.
  • Take the full machine from the front, back and both sides.
  • Add close-ups of what buyers check: the engine, the tyres or tracks, the cabin or seat and controls, the hour meter, and for harvesters, the threshing parts, cutter bar or knives.
  • Do not hide damage. Showing a known fault honestly builds trust and avoids wasted visits from buyers who would walk away anyway.

2. Price it realistically

An overpriced machine sits unsold while buyers compare it with cheaper alternatives. Before setting a price:

  • Search for the same model, a similar year and condition, and note the asking prices.
  • Adjust honestly for your machine's hours, condition and any recent repairs.
  • Decide your lowest acceptable price in advance, and mark the price as negotiable if you are open to offers.

3. Write a complete, honest description

Include everything a serious buyer would ask on the phone:

  • Make, model and year, and whether it is locally assembled or imported.
  • Engine hours, and whether the meter is original.
  • Recent work: engine overhaul, new tyres, new clutch, replaced threshing parts.
  • Attachments or implements included in the price.
  • Documents: registration and import papers where they apply.
  • Any known faults, stated plainly.
  • Your location, so buyers can judge travel.

4. Time it with the season

Demand for machinery follows the crop calendar. Combine harvesters are most sought after in the weeks before wheat and rice harvest, and forage harvesters before maize silage season. Listing a few weeks before the season gives buyers time to inspect and arrange payment.

5. Respond quickly, and sell safely

  • Answer calls and messages promptly. A buyer who cannot reach you will call the next seller.
  • Arrange viewings in daylight and, where possible, with someone else present.
  • Do not hand over the machine or documents until payment has fully cleared.
  • Be wary of buyers who offer to pay more than the asking price or ask you to send money for "transport" or "fees".
